about

Before moving to Hamilton I had given Jimmy Vapid a Rocket Reducers CDR demo at a show. I bumped into him again in Toronto at a Vapids and Queers show and Jim asks me if i want to join a band. I start driving to Hamilton a few times a month on Fridays after work to drink beer and work on songs. I play bass for the first time and we rehearse a set of mainly covers playing Garage and Punk songs, a few Kids tunes, CCR, Count Bishops Ect. We dub our good time, sloppy rock, beer drinking band
"The Harbour Rats."

At the time I am maybe 20 or 21 years and super excited to be playing with Jim and Scott. We record a lot of our rehearsals and I remember think it was fucking amazing we could just hang out and drink beer and record a few songs every night. Sometimes it would be just me and Jim and we would record an original or a cover but that smoke filled basement was a ton of fun! I Had many nights spent on the couch and driving back to Welland the next morning.

The Harbour Rats ended up playing a handful of shows around town and one opening for Teenage Head. Jim made a small number of CDR's and gave them away to friends. This band way just a layover before the joining the Vapids for 10 years of on again off again service.

One night when I though I was showing up for Harbour Rats practice Jim asked me if I wanted to play on a Vapids 7". Scotty laid down the drums and Jim the bass and then my guitar. One time Vapids wonder child 'Johnny No Frills' showed up at some point to lay down another guitar track. We photoshopped him into the Harbour Rats band photo. I've still never met him in person even thou we played on the 'Point Remains The Same' 7".
We still get together every couple years for a Vapids record or a show or two. The Harbour Rats however remain a Drunken, blurry blip on the Hamilton underground Rock 'n' Roll Radar.
